Marseille

Marseille is the centre of a large metropolitan area, the second most populous commune and the third largest city in France. To the east (9th arrondissement) are the callanque's area (kind of little fjords) and the village of Cassis, and further afield is the town of Toulon. To the north of Marseille are a range of small mountains and the 1011 m Mont Saint Victoire. To the west of Marseille is the Camargue region and the Gulf of Lion. The city itself is spread across a wide geographical area divided into 16 arrondissements. The central six contain most of the city's historic buildings and its services.
The city's main thoroughfare, the wide boulevard called La Canebière, stretches eastward from the Old Port (Vieux Port/Panier quarter). The tourist information centre operates at the Old Port end of the Canebière. Adjacent to La Canebière is the Old Port (where the marina and fish market are located.) At the entrance to the Old Port are two large forts - Fort St Nicholas on the south side and Fort St Jean on the other. The main commercial centre of the city intersects with the Canebière at Rue Paradis and the Centre Bourse (the main shopping mall). Pedestrianised squares radiate away from the Canebière and the old port such as Cours Julien and the Place du Général De Gaulle, both of which have fountains.
To the south east of central Marseille is the Prefecture and the roundabout Castellane (a bus and metro interchange) in the 7th arrondissement. To the south west are the hills of the 9th arrondissement, dominated by the Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde. The train station - Gare St Charles - is north of the Centre Bourse in the 3rd arrondissement. It is at the end of La Canebière and is near the square of Victor Hugo. The airport Marignane lies to the North West of the city at the Etang de Berre

Histoire du Louvre, du château au muse

Depuis la fin du XIIe siècle, les bâtiments du Louvre dominent le coeur de Paris ; situés aux limites de la ville, ils ont été peu à peu rattrapés par elle puis englobés en son centre. Dans le même temps, la sombre forteresse des débuts effectuait sa mutation pour devenir la résidence modernisée d'un François Ier puis le somptueux palais du Roi-Soleil. C'est l'histoire de cet édifice et du musée qui à partir de 1793 en a occupé les salles que nous vous proposons d'explorer.

Le Louvre médiéval d'hier

Les quarante-trois années du règne de Philippe Auguste (1180 à 1223) marquent un renforcement considérable du pouvoir monarchique à l'intérieur comme à l'extérieur du royaume. Paris, première ville du continent, est dotée d'une nouvelle et puissante enceinte fortifiée à partir de 1190 et le roi décide de la renforcer, à l'ouest, par une protection supplémentaire. Le château du Louvre naît alors, aux portes d'une cité qu'il est censé protéger du danger Anglo-normand.

Le Louvre classique

Les règnes de Louis XIII et Louis XIV marquent profondément les structures du Louvre et des Tuileries. Le prolongement sous Louis XIII de l'aile ouest de la Cour Carrée marque le point de départ d'un projet ambitieux qui sera mené à son terme par Louis XIV et complété sous Louis XV. Le coeur du monument prend alors l'aspect que nous lui connaissons encore de nos jours. Le désintérêt marqué par le roi après la construction de Versailles plonge le palais dans une nouvelle période de sommeil.

L'apogée du muse

La disparition des Tuileries, démolies en 1882, marque l'acte de naissance du Louvre moderne : le pouvoir quitte définitivement le Louvre qui peut alors se vouer essentiellement à la culture. Seul le ministère des finances, provisoirement installé dans l'aile Richelieu au lendemain de la Commune, fait figure de corps étranger au sein du monument. A partir de cette période, le musée gagne lentement mais sûrement la presque totalité de l'énorme complexe.
